Janakantha editor, executive editor fined

The Supreme Court (SC) has fined Janakantha editor and executive editor for publishing an article raising question about the judges’ role in war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s trial.

The SC fined TK 10,000 to the Daily Janakantha editor and publisher Atiquallah Khan Masud and executive editor Swadesh Roy. In default, they have to serve in jail for seven days.

A six-member extended bench of Appellate Division led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha announced the verdict on Thursday morning.

July 29, the Appellate Division had summoned the duo for publishing an article raising question about the judges’ role in war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s trial. In that day the court upheld SQ Chy`s death.

Earlier on July 16, the newspaper published an article titled “Activity of SQ Chy’s family: Less chances to escape” where the writer stated that the family members of the war criminal had met one of the judges dealing with the case of Salauddin.


Badi allegedly beats up engineer


Awami League MP from Ukhia and Teknaf constituency Abdur Rahman Badi has allegedly beaten up Upazila council engineer.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred during the monthly development coordination meeting of Ukhia Upazila Parishad around 11.00am on Wednesday.
